In the past five years of my life I have known two businessmen who are now in prison due to the decisions they made in the past. Both of these men were extremely wealthy and powerful within their own business sectors while maintaining families with young children at home. Through the family heartbreak, the loss of everything they had ever made, and one’s sentence of fourteen years in a Federal Prison, it makes me wonder what they were actually thinking when this all began.
What kind of ethos do these men have, if any at all? My biggest question was how do you do this to your family? Did they know their chances of being caught? Not only do these children lose a father but they also lose everything they have ever known. One family is currently residing in a tiny apartment with no funds for future education. How is this all worth it?
This blog will act as a guide through my research of ethics and how it affects people later on in life. What is the history of ethos and the laws implemented due to crimes in the past? How does someone define his or her own ethics? What type of education is needed in order to stop these white-collar crimes? How does a company implement codes to prevent unethical decisions? And finally, what effect does this education actually have on the world? I think the issue of ethics in the business industry is crucial; it is ultimately responsible for millions of innocent peoples’ dollars, the greed in the industry, and even the most recent stock market crash.
